Selkie, Scottish Folklore, Original Drawing
31 × 38.6cm or 12.2 × 15.1 inches | “The Song of the Sea” - pen and ink on cartridge paper.
Selkies can be found around the world, but are most commonly found in the folklore and stories of the British Isles. They are creatures that have always taken a firm grasp of my imagination, so much so that I could no longer sit still with their lore fuelling my creativity and simply had to capture the elusive creature.
Meticulously hand-drawn with the fine pen and paintbrushes, I wanted to capture a moment, the moment a seal woman is caught returning to her true form, caught between fates.
I wanted this piece to catch your eye from across the room, to make eye contact with her, to walk up to greet her and be suspended in this moment with her.
